WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – (March 26, 2008) – The American Red Cross Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter announces a call for nominations for its 7th Annual American Red Cross Real Heroes Awards event. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach.
The annual event, created in 2002, grew from a desire to develop a community program that is closely related to the overall mission of the Red Cross – teaching people to save lives. At this year’s luncheon, the awards will be presented in 10 categories: Fire Rescue, Law Enforcement, Medical, Good Samaritan Adult, Good Samaritan Youth- Girl, Good Samaritan Youth-Boy, Military, Animal Rescue, Educator and Marine Rescue.
Candidates must be nominated by the community. Once nominations have been submitted, the selection committee—comprised of community leaders including law enforcement officers, educators, business leaders, and local fire/rescue chiefs—reviews all submissions and selects the final recipients. Nominations for the 2008 Awards are being accepted now through April 25, 2008. Nominees must be a resident of or employed within the counties served by the Chapter—Glades, Hendry, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach counties—and the heroic act must have occurred between May 1, 2007 and April 25, 2008. Also, the nominees must have gone beyond the normal scope of the job to save a life or help those in critical need and the heroic event must fall into one of the 10 categories already described.
“Local citizens are constantly donating their time, skills and hard work to help others in need, whether they were involved in an emergency or were recovering from a fire, tornado, or used CPR to help save a life,” said Freddy Rosario, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We look forward to recognizing and honoring the individuals who gave so much to others during the past year.”
